6 Other Conditions That Weight Loss Drugs Help With
July 17, 2024
The buzz about GLP-1 agonist weight loss drugs is everywhere.
But can these medications help you beyond the scale?
For answers, we turned to Joseph St. Pierre, DO, a medical weight loss specialist with Hartford HealthCare.
How do GLP-1 agonist medications help you lose weight?
You already know the brand names: Ozempic®, Wegovy®, Mounjaro® and Zepbound®, but you may not understand how they work.
Dr. St. Pierre helps simplify this science.
“These medications promote weight loss primarily through appetite suppression,” he says. “They can also improve insulin levels to help with weight loss.”

6 health conditions that GLP-1 agonists can help with
Weight loss medications can impact more than the measuring tape.
According to Dr. St. Pierre, here are six health conditions that weight loss drugs may help with:
- Diabetes: GLP-1 agonists were originally developed as diabetes medications. These medications can help reduce the need for both fast-acting and long-acting insulin. Since then, certain medications including Wegovy® and Zepbound® have been approved for weight loss.
- Coronary artery disease: Select cardiovascular outcome trials showed that using Wegovy® resulted in a 20% reduction in cardiovascular events.
- Obstructive sleep apnea: Weight loss can help reduce excess body fat around the neck, potentially lessening the severity or even reversing sleep apnea. Higher-quality sleep often leads to better weight control, easier weight loss and improved mood.
- Hypertension: Even a modest weight loss of 5% can start to lower blood pressure, improving overall heart health.
- Chronic kidney disease: The kidneys don’t metabolize semaglutide and have shown potential kidney-protective effects in research studies.
- Arthritis: Weight loss can help reduce the pain associated with arthritis and may also help increase activity levels.

Are these medications right for you?
This question should always bring you to your doctor’s office first.
“We will review your medical history and health goals,” explains Dr. St. Pierre. “We’ll also discuss your risk for possible side effects.”
Side effects of these weight loss drugs may include:
- Pancreatitis
- Thyroid cancer
- Bowel obstruction
“These medications can be tough on the body,” says Dr. St. Pierre. “It’s important to lose weight properly when you’re taking them. We risk malnutrition and muscle loss without the right diet and exercise plan.”
But, if used correctly, this prescription may be the answer you’re looking for.
“These medications can be life-changing,” says Dr. St. Pierre. “However, it’s important to work closely with your doctor. They can help you obtain FDA-approved medications, guide you on proper usage and monitor your progress as you work toward your health goals.”
