About the Virginia O’Brien Fortin Chapel
St. Vincent’s Medical Center was opened on June 28, 1905, under the supervision of The Daughters of Charity of St. Vincent de Paul. Since 1617 when the Daughters of Charity was created in Paris, France, it has been an organization experienced in the care of the sick. The original hospital had a chapel on its third floor, and the sisters had their quarters on the same floor. Since that time, the chapel has continued as the spiritual hub of the Medical Center.
The realignment of the Medical Center’s main level, part of its $160 million renovations required the move of its chapel. The Chapel is now located on a corridor off the main lobby. It also provided the opportunity for the creation of this new modern facility, serving the needs of patients, visitors and employees of diverse faith traditions, but also reflecting the strong Catholic identity and mission that characterizes St. Vincent’s.
