At St. Vincent’s Medical Center we treat premature, underweight, and at-risk newborn babies in need of intensive medical care at our Neonatal Intensive Care Unit (NICU).

CT Children's | St. Vincent's - NICUConnecticut Children’s neonatologists provide 24/7 physician coverage for the St. Vincent’s Neonatal Intensive Care Unit (NICU). This collaboration reflects an ongoing investment by St. Vincent’s to expand services for mothers and children and is consistent with Connecticut Children’s mission of providing world-class pediatric care close to home.

St. Vincent’s NICU is certified Level III. This designation means our NICU is equipped with the most advanced medical facilities and a highly trained staff who are at-the-ready to provide the best care for high-risk newborns.

"My pregnancy was considered high risk so the NICU and the resources here are very important. I know that they could have handled it. The nurses and doctors were outstanding. They really made me feel I wasn’t just a number, I was an actual person and they cared about us."

- Beth, Greg and Connor, Easton, CT

Trained Staff

Our specially trained staff consists of full-time neonatologists -- pediatricians specializing in premature infants -- and board certified pediatricians who work as a team alongside trained neonatal nurses 24 hours a day, 7 days a week. We help each child grow stronger. We support you and your family so you fully understand the needs of your infant.

Keeping You and Your Baby Together

At St. Vincent’s, you and your baby are never separated on different floors. If your baby is in the nearby NICU, you are always close by. You are welcome to visit, hold, and feed your infant with a nurse and/or lactation consultant who is available to assist.

When getting ready to bring your baby home, we have a designated mother-baby suite, so even if mom is already discharged, she stays with us to care for, feed, and prepare to take her baby home.

Neonatology

Neonatology at St. Vincent’s is a subspecialty of pediatrics that provides medical care to infants born prematurely or to infants who become ill.

Whether a newborn is found to have a heart, pulmonary, digestive system or other medical issue, our specially trained neonatologists prepare them to recognize and treat such conditions in even very tiny premature babies. St. Vincent’s has made significant advances in caring for expectant mothers, especially women experiencing pregnancy complications.
